From the 6th to 8th centuries, it was part of the Eastern Roman Empire. During the medieval period, Rome lost its relevance. However, it regained power and wealth. Today, it’s a place of beauty, a source of learning, and also a capital of the arts.

Rome is uniquely located. It’s in the central-western part of the Italian Peninsula. The city lies along the Tiber River. It’s in Italy’s Lazio region. Vatican City, an independent country, is within Rome’s boundaries. Rome’s landscape is diverse. It features mountains, hills, as well as the coasts.

Rome’s culture is rich. It’s a mix of high culture, the arts, fashion, and historic architecture. Also the home of the Roman Catholic Church and the seat of the Italian Republic.
