I created Black and White Photography of Scotland when I finally visited Scotland in 2016 after being at the top of my travel list for a long time. Extensive planning went into this trip because of the prolonged winter in Scotland; there are only a few months when to visit the highlands due to snow.
Travel In Scotland
Additionally, getting around Scotland is challenging as an independent traveler. The cars are small, and the roads are very narrow (plus they drive on the opposite side than the U.S.), so making a self-driving trip takes some skill. Also, since there are no direct flights from the Washington, D.C area, I flew into Dublin, Ireland, then connected via a small jet to Edinburgh, Scotland.
Beauty Of Scotland
However, despite these challenges, Scotland was truly magical and worth the effort to get there. The picturesque landscapes of mountains and lakes, the romantic ruins of castles, and the quaint small towns make for a memorable trip.
Scotland’s capital is renowned for it’s heritage, culture and festivals. Equally important are the buildings and monuments owing to Edinburgh’s eventful past. High up on the hill is world famous Edinburgh Castle.
Inverness is not only home to the legend of the Loch Ness monster but also is considered the capital of the Scottish highlands. Here you will find medieval ruins and also prehistoric sites. Inverness is on the pathway to the west but well worth spending some time here.
Isle of Skye
Definitely, the most beautiful scenery in all of the United Kingdom. As well as the scenic green hills there is also alongside beautiful lakes and waterways. Additionally, the harbor with boats and color of houses on side of cliffs are spectacular.
Not only renowned great Scotch Whisky in Oban but also sail boats on Bay of Oban are picture perfect. I do recommend a stop by Oban Distillery but there is also a great whiskey bar in town.
